Forgers took their winning run to three games in the Merit League with a hard fought victory over the North Derbyshire Chargers at All Saints Sport College yesterday. Forgers, who fielded a young side, many of which had never played Rugby League, took an early lead when hooker Simon Waller charged over from dummy half. Man of the match Ben Parker added the extras. The chargers pulled it back shortly after. North Derbyshire would then play the rest of the game with 12 men after a trip on Forgers half back Sam Gray as he was about to score. Forgers never took full advantage of their numerical advantage as the Chargers kept pinning them back with a gutsy performance. It wasn’t until five minutes from time that The Forgers took control of the game. Waller again crashed over from short distance and Parker added the extras. Then a moment of magic from scrum half Parker as he latched onto his own chip kick to put the game beyond North Derbyshire. It was a good victory for the Forgers but coach David Hooper knows there is still work to be done before they can match last season. “The lads did well today. The new boys who came in today did brilliantly. We have a lot work on but I’m delighted to get the victory.”
