Moorends Thorne Marauders ran in 9 tries to sink Sheffield Forgers at All Saints Sports College yesterday in the opening day of the RLC Lincolnshire & South Yorkshire Conference. Forgers, who knew it was going to a big step up from last year, were well beaten by an impressive well-drilled Thorne outfit. The Forgers were 36-0 down at half time but showed signs of encouragement with determined defence and inventive attacking play, there was just no way through the Thorne line as the Forgers forwards tried in vain to punch holes in their opponents defence. In the second half the Forgers passion and determination was rewarded with two tries from hooker Joe Howe and centre Vinnie Caldwell. They also kept their visitors down to only three scores. Coach Herb Gray was quick to praise his players but added the need to recruit new players. “I was so proud of the lads today they never gave in. It is a very tough level and we had some lads who are 16-17 who stepped up today and showed they can play.” “We were a few key players short today and we need to recruit if we want to compete at this level.” “We have some great players at this club and the future is very bright. We can take a lot of positives away from this game.”
