The Sheffield Forgers won their second successive game with a narrow victory over an impressive German Exiles side.
The visitors, with aspirations of one day launching a German National Rugby League side , proved to be tough opposition, even though they were a man short.
The Forgers had the best of the early exchanges and quickly opened a 12 point lead, one of the scores coming from a 5th tackle kick and catch, finished impressively by winger John Horne.
However, the lead did not last long as the Germans rallied and leveled the scores through impressive play. The half continued very much in the same vane, with the Forgers only managing a one score advantage, despite their numerical advantage on the pitch.
The second half proved to be a ‘game of two halves’ with The Forgers opening out an impressive margin early on with a number of scores including tries from Tom Gray, Tom Else and Jon Hitchman. Dan Gray who was impeccable all day seemed able to add the extras from anywhere on the pitch, helping The Forgers to a 42-28 lead.
However, The Forgers still seem reticent to finish teams off and by the end of the game they were hanging on to their lead. Only some tired last ditch tackling maintained the lead to a slender one try victory by the final whistle.
Versatile 80 minute man Tom Gray was stand out for the Forgers, whilst the whole of the German Exiles team, who finished the stronger despite their disadvantage, should be congratulated for their determination.
Saturday May 10, sees The Forgers make their Rugby League Conference North debut against Thorne, and what will undoubtedly be the toughest test they have faced so far. The Merit League side are also at home to Chesterfield in the preceding fixture. |
