Sheffield Forgers finally shrugged of their novice tags and recorded their first winter win over Cowling Harlequins. It was a win the Forgers faithful had been waiting for since a summer semi final victory over Birmingham Bulldogs in the Merit League Shield competition. The Sheffield men have had mixed performance so far this season with a combination of narrow and heavy defeats, however coach Scaife was in a confident mood "We're improved week on week, I'm starting to see the lads transferring the hard work we do in training onto the pitch. Lady luck has deserted us in the last few weeks with player withdrawals through injuries before and during matches, however today we have a full quota fit and ready to go".
The first half kicked off in physical fashion with Cowling looking to pick up where they left off but where quickly put off their game with enforcer Chris Coates leading the way with some ferocious hits, fellow prop Simon Travis and second rower soon followed suit with a few hits of their own pinning the 'quins in their own half. Some scrappy play by the Forgers was cleaned up by the returning hero Sam Turnell who caught Cowling off guard with a scoot from dummy and power through three would be tacklers to chalk up the first points of the game. Stung into action Cowling picked up their game and forced two full sets deep in Forgers territory. Some fast hands saw a neat score in the left corner levelling the score at 4-4. Forgers hard working pack started to dominate their opponents gaining good yards and setting a useful platform for the backs to flourish, not one to miss an opportunity Full Back Ben Taylor ghosted through a defensive gap to make the score 8-4. As the half drew to a close Dave Pearce extended the lead which was quickly narrowed by a late 'quins try ending the first half 10-8. In the numbing cold the Forgers came out on fire for the second period, with Big Sam Turnell picking up his second try of the match and GB trialist Chris Rogers added a further 4 points was a classy try, Pearce added the first conversion of the match to extend the score to 18-8. Turnell soon completed his comeback with his hat-trick try which Rogers converted for 24-8. With the game looking more one-sided, returning hooker David Hooper hit a further blow to the visitors with a cheeky scoot from dummy to score under the sticks, Pearce again kicked the extras 30-8. Cowlings misery was further compounded as flying Full Back Ben Taylor broke free for a scorching 70 yard try which had the Forgers faithful in full voice and a taste for a 50 point revenge. The home sat obliged the crown with another quick fire try from Dave Pearce as he waltzed through a massive gap to touch down, also kicking the extras to make it 42-8. A lack of concentration in the Forgers defence allowed the visitors the last of their points with a consolation try under the posts 42 - 14. Stung by the lapse Forgers regrouped and saw a very well deserved try for powerful prop Chris Coates 48-14. Still not done the home side piled on the pressure and popped the ball wide to vice captain Gavin Draper who side stepped four players to touchdown, Dave Pearce converted to finish the game at 54-14. |
